The purpose of this study was to better understand how institutions approach student-athlete support programs, how support programs are financed, and what effect their support efforts have on student-athletes, especially student-athletes of color. This study was a qualitative, comparative case study of three Division 1 athletic programs at Predominantly White Institutions in the Southern United States. Data were collected through interviews with support program staff and publicly accessible budgets and websites. Themes were identified within each individual case and then cross-analyzed. This study found that institutions were supporting student-athletes by providing holistic programming including career development, life-skills programs, and mental health supports. Institutions had at least one person responsible for student-athlete development, however, the level of programming was dictated by the institution's budget for student-athlete development. Also, these institutions relied on feedback from student-athletes to guide program planning and required minority student-athletes to advocate for their own support.
