The confraternities of northern Italy in the late middle ages were the product of an increasing emphasis on the spiritual meaning and religious value of life lived fully within the world, and of a newly urban social and political setting. My thesis examines the largely neglected question of how these changes in religious and social life affected the pious and spiritual lives of the members of the confraternities. It is based on analysis of the statutes of the confraternities and the vernacular religious songs (laude) that they sang; it also uses communal legislation and chronicles to place developments in confraternal structure and emphasis within a specific social and political context. The major themes of confraternal devotion that appear in the statutes are mercy and penitence. These themes were understood to be important for men's relations not just with God, but also with their fellow men; thus, the search for God's mercy meant that men were obliged to be merciful to one another as well, through care of the poor and sick as well as prayers and provision for masses. Penitence was also seen as encompassing not only an individual's personal repentance, but also expiation of collective sin and the establishment of political and spiritual peace. These themes took on new meaning as the confraternities grew and became centers for popular devotion. An examination of the case of Florence reveals that the obligation to care for members was often expanded to include ministering to the entire community, and the confraternities were specifically delegated by the commune to provide necessary social services. Mercy and penitence are also explored in the laude, and are more explicitly combined with another concern that also appears in the statutes, fear of death and the Last Judgment. Mary is the mater misericordiae, and Christ is the loving Redeemer, but both are also capable of rejecting man's pleas for mercy and his abject repentance. Even where rejection is not an explicit theme, there is tension in the language of mercy or union, suggesting deep uncertainty about the possibility of reconciling God and the world. The thesis concludes with a chapter that is more an epilogue than a formal conclusion, tracing briefly the themes discussed in previous chapters as they appear in vernacular sermons, Marian theology, and saints' cults.
