Franz Schubert enlarged Classical models to extend music's symmetry and downplay its teleological impulse, features closely associated with Viennese Classical form. His last musical period (c. 1824-1828) provides the ripest examples of his idiosyncratic manipulation of traditional formal designs, compositional strategies he refined and synthesized in his Quartettsatz and "Unfinished" Symphony. Through the study of formal and rhetorical gestures, lyricism, subjectivity, and musical discourse, the music from this period is analyzed to contrast Schubert's conception of form with that of his predecessors, mainly Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the young Ludwig van Beethoven.
