Johannine theology of mission, according to the Epistles, is not entirely known in missiology. The major focus of this dissertation is an exegetical analysis of selected texts in the Johannine Epistles to explore a discernible theology of mission. This dissertation will clarify specific theological texts and read them within the background of the mission in the early church. Contemporary scholarship has defined mission by two new terms (missiology and missional) within the same discipline that will be discussed in forthcoming chapters. The dissertation summarizes the research for making the case for determining criteria for the theology of the Johannine Epistles that provides a foundation for the mission of God.A summary of this dissertation begins with the introduction of the subject in chapter one followed by the literature view in chapter two on current scholars of the Johannine theology and mission. In chapter three is the exegesis of the Johannine theology by reading from the Greek text on the incarnation of Christ, his deity in the Logos, and the message proclaimed and announced by John and the early disciples (1 John 1:1-5). In chapter four is the exegesis of the Johannine theology of the propitiatory death of Jesus that provided for believers and sinners the atonement, the advocacy, and the propitiation for sins covered by the blood of Jesus (1 John 2:1-2). Chapter five gives the exegesis of the theology of love as a mission in the first century, and the Father sending his Son as the Savior of the world (1 John 4:7-14). I will examine from chapter six Second and Third John texts of missionary theology such as the witnessing of the gospel, teaching the truth about Christ, and the care and support of missionaries (2 John 9-11; 3 John 8). Finally, the dissertation finishes with the conclusions and applications to mission established on the foundation of theology contained in these texts and suggestions for further study.
