This dissertation investigates the gift of eternal life in the Gospel of John. I argue that eternal life in the Gospel of John consists of being recreated as a child of the same Father as the Son through the liturgy of the New Temple, which is the Body of Christ. I show that John draws from the first three chapters of Genesis in connecting the three major themes of creation, sonship, and liturgy to eternal life in his Gospel. In recreating us for eternal life, initially through Baptism and allowing us to persevere in it through reception of the Eucharist, our sonship in Jesus has a liturgical character and the life-giving liturgy led by Jesus is essentially filial. Thus, eternal life in the Gospel of John is something that is possessed in the present, but progressively deepens the more intimately one is united to Jesus. The full participation in eternal life is realized in the "resurrection to life" (5:29) which is the beatific vision and our definitive rest in the Triune God.
