Chapter one contains the introduction to the research problem, delimitations of the study, research questions, definitions of key terms, procedural overview, and research assumptions. The chapter concludes with a survey of the state of research of perpetual, race-based slavery and segregation, specifically as it relates to four white evangelicals: Jonathan Edwards, Richard Furman, Charles Hodge, and Bob Jones, Sr. Chapter two gives a brief biographical sketch of Congregational minister Jonathan Edwards, coupled with his character as a pastor-theologian. Following this biographical information, there is an examination of Edwards's understanding as to how white evangelicals should deal with blacks and the factors that undergird his understanding. Included in these written works are: Christian Liberty, Receipt for a Slave Girl Venus, The Duty of Charity to the Poor, Edwards's Biblical Commentary on Job 31:13-14, and Edwards's Draft Letter on Slavery. Finally it will be noted how Edwards's actions compared to his beliefs, and conclude with the legacy and lesson of Edwards, answering some of the difficult questions pertaining to the man and his beliefs. Chapter three includes a brief biographical sketch of Baptist pastor Richard Furman, coupled with his character as a pastor-theologian. Following this biographical information, there is an examination of Furman's understanding as to how white evangelicals should deal with blacks and the factors that undergird his understanding. Included in these written documents are: Questions on Slavery, An Essay on Slavery, and Furman's Exposition of the Views of the Baptists Relative to the Colored Population of the United States. Finally it will be noted how Furman's actions compared to his beliefs, and conclude with his legacy and lesson, answering some of the difficult questions pertaining to the man and his beliefs. Chapter four gives a brief biographical sketch of Presbyterian professor Charles Hodge, coupled with his character as a pastor-theologian. Following this biographical information, there is an examination of Hodge's understanding as to how white evangelicals should deal with blacks and the factors that undergirded his understanding. Included in these written works are: Slavery, Abolitionism, Emancipation, and Hodge's Commentary on Ephesians. Finally it will be noted how Hodge's actions compared to his beliefs, and conclude with his legacy and lesson, answering some of the difficult questions pertaining to the man and his beliefs. Chapter five includes a brief biographical sketch of Southern Methodist evangelist Bob Jones, Sr., coupled with his character as a pastor-theologian. Following this biographical information, there is an examination of Jones's understanding as to how white evangelicals should deal with blacks and the factors that undergirded his understanding. The work examined will be Jones's radio address from April 17, 1960 entitled, Is Segregation Scriptural? Finally it will be noted how Jones's actions compared to his beliefs, and conclude with his legacy and lesson, answering some of the difficult questions pertaining to the man and his beliefs. Chapter six is the conclusion of the dissertation and it contains the summary of findings, the implications of the study, suggestions for further research, suggestions for further study, and a final exhortation. The dissertation contains four appendices which includes Edwards's "Draft Letter on Slavery," Furman's "Exposition of the Views of the Baptists Relative to the Colored Population of the United States," Slavery by Charles Hodge, and Bob Jones's Radio Address, Is Segregation Scriptural?
