This dissertation offers an understanding of the process of reading and interpreting the biblical text in a transformative way, one that accents both the preacher's intellectual and experiential encounter with the text. This transformative reading of the biblical text is guided by an ongoing engagement with the complex nature and multiple dimensions of the text that allow an encounter with God through the Scripture by the Spirit. This opens the possibility of an encounter that leads both the preacher and the ecclesial community to the transformation of lives that is characterized by Christlikeness. As a consequence, the underlying agenda of this dissertation is to explore a transformative homiletic that enhances union with God as the people of God in Christ through the working of the Holy Spirit, who is present sacramentally in both the preacher and the ecclesial gathering.In order to draw upon these interpretive insights for the further development of the homiletics of Korean Pentecostals, Chapter One examines the early Korean Pentecostal homiletical approach in its context. Chapter Two stresses the similarities and dissimilarities between the early Korean Pentecostal interpretive understanding of the Scriptures and the classical Pentecostal hermeneutics based on the works of classical Pentecostal figures and contextual scholars of Pentecostalism. Chapter Three concentrates on the writings of French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005), which mediate between objectively reconstructing the meaning of a text in its original context and existentially appropriating a text. Following Ricoeur's interpretive method, Chapter Four focuses on the homilies on the Song of Songs and other works of French Cistercian mystic and theologian Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), which provide a foundation that promotes the spiritual formation of the believer and enhances the conditions for the possibility of a transformative engagement with the Scriptures. Chapter Five clarifies the concept of a transformative engagement with the text and explores the possibility of a holistic approach to biblical hermeneutics for Korean Pentecostals as a contemporary method of interpreting the biblical text. Drawing upon those hermeneutical insights, the chapter suggests a five-step transformative engagement with the Scriptures as an alternative biblical hermeneutic for contemporary Korean Pentecostals.
