In this dissertation, we investigate various theories of massive gravity in three, four, and five dimensions mainly with the goal of either alleviating the famous van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity and/or improving the regime of validity of the theory to shorter distances. We begin with a general study of Lorentz-violating massive gravity theories where there is no strong coupling problem in certain regimes of the mass parameter space. We then consider how such a theory could arise from a spontaneous breaking of translation symmetry by a fluid or solid medium at low energies. After this, we explore a special Chern-Simons gauge theory in three dimensions which is at least perturbatively equivalent to Fierz-Pauli theory and we analyze the stability and degrees of freedom of this theory, discovering a novel gauge symmetry which assists us in our analysis. The third chapter explores an intricate set-up in which we consider gravity in AdS5 with a boundary coupled to two scalar fields with special boundary conditions such that a mass is generated for the graviton at low energies through quantum loop corrections to the graviton propagator. We present strong evidence that there is a massive graviton induced on the bounding 4D brane. Then, in the final chapter, we conduct a complete study of the Randall-Sundrum model for scalars, vectors, and tensors, respectively. We clarify some interesting properties in the previously solved scalar and vector cases overlooked in the literature. We then solve the Randall-Sundrum model for massive gravity for the first time and find that there is no vDVZ discontinuity or strong coupling problem on the "Planck brane". We show how this is possible from the four dimensional point of view from the theory of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes.
