Park managers in Brazil have recently understood the power of recreational experiences to stimulate a relationship with nature and commitment to its conservation. In their discourse, the central supposition is that those connected to nature and feeling a sense of belonging to nature tend to be more mindful of the environment and more supportive of nature conservation. However, providing visitation opportunities that effectively facilitate visitor experiences in nature has been a managers' lonely endeavor dependent on their skills and beliefs about visitation and no clear visitation policy. Therefore, this study aimed at providing a theoretical base and empirically tested frameworks to collaborate with their efforts. A visitor relationship with nature was explored by examining two constructs: nature connectedness and nature belongingness. This research contends that an outdoor experience in a protected area strengthens that relationship and stimulates intentions to behave pro-environmentally. In this study, pro-environment behavior intentions were measured as general conservation behavior intentions (related to everyday life) and park-specific conservation behaviors. The study used a mixed-methods approach, and data were collected at Serra dos Orgaos National Park, a Brazilian protected area in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July and August 2018. The quantitative section used a pretest-posttest design. Pre-visit and post-visit surveys were applied to the same Parnaso's visitors to measure the impact of an experience in the park on their relationship with nature. The qualitative phase was completed using two different methods of data collection: an open-ended questionnaire applied during the experience in the park using the Experience Sampling Method and a follow-up interview one week after the trip, applied to a subsample of participants. Results demonstrated that both connectedness and belongingness positively influence intentions to behave pro-environmentally and that those intentions significantly improved after the park experience. Moreover, those who frequently visit protected areas tend to have more intentions to act pro-environmentally than those who do not. Results also showed that most participants acknowledged that each experience in a protected area strengthens their relationship with nature. The aspects of the experience considered most important to strengthen connectedness and belongingness were the excellent Parnaso's conservation status, the welcoming and friendly environment, and the availability and diversity of activities and services to support visitation. Those aspects allowed visitors to have more profound experiences, feel immersed in nature, and have a sense of wellbeing they could only feel in that kind of environment. Status of conservation and support for visitation helped participants pay attention to the park's nature, interact with it, and learn from it, opening space to a greater awareness of the person-nature relationship. Participants realized and valorized that the park was fulfilling its mission by protecting a natural heritage that belongs to everyone, allowing people to experience that conserved environment by organizing the structures and staff to welcome visitors. Those results are highly illustrative of the importance of visitation to stimulate visitor's support for conservation and may inspire Brazilian protected area agencies and managers.

Em seu discurso, a suposicao central e que aqueles que estao ligados a natureza e tem um sentimento de pertencimento a ela tendem a ser mais atentos ao meio ambiente e mais favoraveis a conservacao da natureza. No entanto, fornecer oportunidades de visitacao que facilitem efetivamente as experiencias do visitante tem sido um esforco solitario dos gerentes, que depende de suas habilidades e crencas sobre a visitacao, considerando que no pais nao ha politica de visitacao clara. Portanto, este estudo teve como objetivo fornecer uma base teorica e estruturas empiricamente testadas para colaborar com seus esforcos. A relacao do visitante com a natureza foi explorada examinando-se dois construtos: conexao com a natureza e pertencimento a natureza. Esta pesquisa afirma que uma experiencia ao ar livre em uma area protegida fortalece essa relacao e estimula as intencoes de se comportar de forma pro-ambiental. Neste estudo, as intencoes de comportamento pro-meio ambiente foram medidas como intencoes de comportamento de conservacao geral (relacionadas a vida cotidiana) e comportamentos de conservacao especificos, relacionados as areas protegidas. O estudo utilizou uma abordagem de metodos mistos, e os dados foram coletados no Parque Nacional da Serra dos Orgaos, uma unidade de conservacao brasileira localizada no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, em julho e agosto de 2018. A secao quantitativa usou um desenho pre-pos-teste. Pesquisas pre e pos-visita foram aplicadas aos mesmos visitantes do Parnaso para medir o impacto de uma experiencia no parque em sua relacao com a natureza. A fase qualitativa foi concluida por meio de dois metodos diferentes de coleta de dados: um questionario aberto aplicado durante a experiencia no parque usando o Metodo de Amostragem de Experiencia e uma entrevista de acompanhamento uma semana apos a viagem, aplicada a uma subamostra de participantes. Os resultados demonstraram que tanto a conexao quanto o pertencimento influenciam positivamente as intencoes de se comportar de maneira pro-ambiental e que essas intencoes melhoraram significativamente apos a experiencia no parque. Alem disso, aqueles que visitam com frequencia as areas protegidas tendem a ter mais intencoes de agir em prol do meio ambiente do que aqueles que nao o fazem. Os resultados tambem mostraram que a maioria dos participantes reconheceu que cada experiencia em uma unidade de conservacao fortalece sua relacao com a natureza. Os aspectos da experiencia considerados mais importantes para fortalecer a conexao e o pertencimento foram o excelente estado de conservacao do area visitada, o ambiente acolhedor e amigavel e a disponibilidade e diversidade de atividades e servicos de apoio a visitacao. Esses aspectos permitiram aos visitantes vivencias mais profundas, se sentir imerso na natureza, gerando uma sensacao de bem-estar que so encontram naquele ambiente. O bom estado de conservacao e o apoio a visitacao ajudaram os participantes a prestar atencao na natureza, interagir e aprender com ela, abrindo espaco para uma maior consciencia da relacao pessoa-natureza. Os participantes perceberam e valorizaram que o parque cumpria a sua missao ao proteger um patrimonio natural que e de todos, permitindo as pessoas vivenciar esse ambiente conservado ao organizar as estruturas e funcionarios para receber os visitantes. Esses resultados sao bastante ilustrativos da importancia da visitacao para estimular o apoio do visitante a conservacao e podem inspirar orgaos ambientais e gestores de unidades de conservacao brasileiras.
