One area of interest developing out of decades of research on bilingual education has been the increase in dual language immersion programs in the United States. According to Cervantes-Soon (2014), one of the challenges of dual language schools has been a shortage of qualified and trained bilingual teachers. The purpose of the study was to examine Spanish immersion teachers' perceptions regarding their preparedness to teach in K-12 dual language programs. The following research questions were proposed: RQ1: What are the perceptions of Spanish immersion teachers regarding their preparedness to teach in a dual language setting? RQ2: What do Spanish immersion teachers perceive as challenges they face in the classroom? RQ3: What institutional support systems are in place for immersion teachers to improve instructional practices in a dual language setting? This research study used a qualitative case study design. Purposeful sampling of 15 dual language Spanish teachers hired into the dual language programs in Delaware public schools were recruited and interviewed. Thematic analysis provided the data analysis methodology. The results of this study indicated that higher education often does not prepare dual language teachers and it falls on the schools to provide professional development to build up and enhance capacity of their dual language teaching staff.
