To date, both the scholarly community have paid much attention to individuals' value predispositions such as religiosity and political ideology as the determinants of attitudes toward scientific issues and ways to communicate about science effectively. However, as exemplified by Donald Trump's win in the 2016 election, recent trends signal a critical missing piece to be examined- individual residential locations that constitute "rural-urban divides." Rurality in the place of residence is particularly significant in two respects. First, in terms of personal values, rurality has shown to be a root of a social- and class- identity, cultivating rural resentment against "professional people" and "people in power" in urbanized areas. Scientists are intellectual authority and can be perceived as one of such out-groups in the eyes of rural residents. Consequently, rurality in the place of residence can further relate to a more negative attitude toward scientists and science. Second, considering the media environment, rurality is strongly associated with less availability of local news, including news about local politics and science in the local context. Because of the reduced availability of local news, rurality can be further associated with the increased dependence on online sources for news and national news media, which are largely national in focus. As a result, residing in rural areas can be related to more exposure to national news and politicization of science relative to more urbanized areas. Such dissimilar information environments and potentially more negative attitudes toward scientists based on rurality require additional attention to communicate effectively about scientific issues, including the preventative measures of COVID-19. Hence, this dissertation explores how rurality relates to individuals' attitudes toward scientists and scientific issues. I further explore the underlying mechanisms of the significant association between rurality and the attitude toward scientists, in terms of local information environments, along with variables measuring community-level educational and socioeconomic disparities. Following these studies, the dissertation examines the associations of the narratives, topical frames, and rurality in public discourse about climate change on the Twitter platform. The dissertation thereby attempts to make a scholarly contribution to the intersection of science and political communication.
