Major League Baseball (MLB) has a competitive imbalance among teams, which has been compounded by free agency. Free agency is an auction model not designed for equal participation among teams, as free agents are averse to entering the market if the teams determined to be the highest bidders are viewed as less desirable franchises. While mitigation methods are in place, continued failure led franchises to seek alternate analytically driven methods. The success of Moneyball in the early 2000s led to an expansion of sabermetrics and further in-depth statistics such as WAR. WAR is the pre-eminent sabermetric and has proven to be an excellent indicator and predictor of both player and team performance. Focused on WAR, handedness, sentiment analysis, and park factors, this research project answered: Does roster construction optimization measurably increase a franchise's likelihood of participating in the MLB post-season? Six cleaned datasets, ranging in size from 31 to 51,665 rows, were deployed via summary statistics, sentiment analysis, park factors, logistic regression, and machine learning. Completion of the research methods showed that right-handed starting and relief pitchers, right-handed shortstops and center fielders, and left-handed third basemen in the American League, and right-handed starting and relief pitchers, right-handed left fielders and center fielders, and left-handed right fielders in the National League, represent the highest contributing position groups and most immediate optimization opportunities. For MLB, increased competitive balance is a positive result, as it results in greater revenue sharing across all sources, as well as increased league interest.
