This paper will evaluate the impact of marquee player signings from two aspects: attendance and Internet searches. We built our own datasets using attendance data from Transfermarkt.com and searching index data from Baidu Index, along with control variables obtained from various sources, to study the impact.We use the standard Difference-in-Differences model to evaluate the impact of marquee player signings on attendance, and the event study model to quantify the impact of the signings on the searching index. We find that although signing marquee players would boost attendance, the marquee player signings for the home teams are not as efficient in generating increase in attendance as marquee player signings for the away teams. In addition, marquee player signings do not necessarily boost fan interest.
