The examination of debate competition is significant as it has a history that dates back thousands of years, and studies have shown that the current competitive activity carries with it numerous benefits for its participants. Despite its history, there has been little leadership research found that investigates or examines the activity of competitive academic debate. Purpose: This study addresses the perceived lack of research on academic debate coach leadership through the lens of sports leadership theory. It examines the moderating effect of competitor motivational needs on the relationship between the competitor's perceived leadership behavior of their coaches and their satisfaction with their coaches. Method: Data was collected from 98 undergraduate debate competitors, 18 and older, who competed in International Public Debate Association style debate for collegiate programs during the spring semester of 2020. Debate competitors' perceptions about their coaches' leadership behaviors were assessed using the 2016 Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (Chiu et al., 2016). The debate competitors' motivation to compete in academic debate was assessed using the Wood and Rowan-Morin (1989) Debate Motivation Survey. Finally, the debate competitor's satisfaction in their coaches was assessed using Section D "Task Processes" from the Athletic Satisfaction Questionnaire developed by Riemer (1995). Results: The motivational needs of debaters were not found to moderate the relationship between leadership behaviors and the satisfaction of competitors with their coaches. Competitors reported being "Often" satisfied with their coaches, and the study revealed that IPDA coaches in the top 30 percent of the organization's national rankings exhibit positive feedback, training, and instruction, democratic behavior, and social support often and seldom exhibit autocratic behaviors. Educational needs and personal needs rate higher than competitive needs as motivation for competitors.
