As homelessness continues to rise in the United States funding and acknowledgement is lowering. Being homeless changes a person. An individual will have a different lifestyle, mental state, and even instincts due to the need for adaptability to survive and general trauma endured. Due to strict legislation, homelessness can be viewed as illegal; makeshift shelters are destroyed with little to no notice. The process of seeking shelter assistance is often dehumanizing as it involves long lines, intense questioning, and requires one to be in a specific demographic. If someone is accompanied by another person or pet, they are not accepted and left to wander the nearby streets. When an individual is accepted into a shelter the environment is often large open rooms with a limit on privacy, resources, storage, time, and flexibility. Homeless shelters need to be reevaluated to become something more suitable and humanizing. The purpose of this thesis is to explore what homeless shelters require to imagine how to aid the community in its survival. The West End in Cincinnati, Ohio is filled with abandoned feral landscapes and structures that leave void in the urban environment. Using vacant spaces, like the West End, to address homelessness can help give a new life to the homeless individuals and the community around them. The idea is to create shelter even with limited resources, money, time, and space. The homeless community needs assistance; all the individuals have unique needs to be met. This thesis provides ideas to produce multiple levels of shelter and large community spaces to create a sanctuary. The shelters will provide a reliable safe space for individuals to call home, while reconnecting them with the general population, and most importantly dignifying said individuals to the general public.
