Even though power systems have undergone a giant leap in the past decades, the polluting depleting fossil fuels are still the main resource for electricity generation. Several alternatives have been identified for the purpose of decelerating greenhouse gases production, most popularly Renewable Energy Systems (RES). However, such systems lack consistency and certainty, due to their resources intermittent and stochastic nature. As a result of this integration, the operation of the microgrid is subjected to implications in terms of cost and reliability.A viable solution, that mitigates the volatility and intermittency of renewables, reduces the operating cost and improves the reliability of the system, is Battery Energy storage System (BESS). The reduction in the operating cost must compensate for the technology huge capital costs. Thus, optimal sizing decides the required capacity to gain maximal planning cost reduction and support the grid reliability. Both aspects are analyzed and classified based on their roles in shaping the solution in the first part of the thesis, with much attention being paid to the deterministic nature of the mathematical sizing dilemma and the stochastic modeling schemes for reliability evaluation techniques. The second part is dedicated to presenting the proposed method and tuning the associated parameters to gain better modeling of power system operation.The suggested approach constructs a mathematical model, which encompasses the investment cost of the BESS as well as the microgrid operating. In addition, it employs Mote Carlo Simulations (MCS) for modeling components outages and renewable energy resources' volatility. Embedding those uncertainties into the model allows reliability index Loss of Load Expectation (LOLE) to be evaluated in order to ensure reliability criterion satisfaction. Using Mixed Integer Linear programming (MILP) to formulate and solve the problem in a reasonable time, the optimal size was found. The concluded capacity reduced the overall costs of the microgrid to the minimal and assured reliability criterion satisfaction.The simulation tests have been conducted on CPLEX platform, while General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) and Matlab are devoted for stochastic long-term modeling of uncertainties. The results have proven the credibility of the solution, illustrating that increasing the size beyond optimal point, 5 MW at 25 MWh, imposes higher expansion costs to the microgrid.In addition to that, the effects of imposing firm capacity on RES have been inspected. It has been demonstrated that imposing such constraint affects the economical operation as well as the reliability of the microgrid. In terms of economics, 30% firm capacity was required to obtain the same economical efficiency of a microgrid with fluctuating RES. Moreover, the economical feasibility of incorporating the optimal BESS size was maintained, yielding further cost reduction compared to non-optimal size. While, reliability constraint was fulfilled at the expense of higher Loss of Energy Expectation (LOEE) since the contribution of RES during outages is limited to the specified firm capacity. Accordingly, imposing firm capacity provides the grid with base power generation capable of satisfying reliability criterion. Nevertheless, it may be economically infeasible whether the optimal BESS size is included or not.Whereas, having demand response increased the economic efficiency of the system and supported the grid reliability. About 23% cost reduction was achieved at 25% demand response and reliability criterion was satisfied as the decided generation schedule was sufficient to grant that the exposition to load shedding circumstances is within acceptable limit. Regarding sizing dilemma, it was demonstrated that beyond a certain point of load controllability the evaluated BESS size is no longer optimum. For instance, the 18.81% cost reduction at 20% demand response could not be attained after incorporating the optimal BESS size, dropping to 18%. Although reliability constraint was fulfilled for all cases, the adapted changes to the load profile could not benefit from the installed capacity and compensate for the high investment costs, increasing the planning cost.
