The rationale for this study came from my desire to uncover how mental health consumer artists create restorative narratives in the face of potential societal and self-stigma using the visual arts. Therefore, this qualitative narrative study will explore the lived stories of mental health consumers and developing arts structures to mitigate stigma and cultivate restorative narratives. My first research question is: How do community arts projects transform the experience of stigma and empowerment among individuals with a mental health history? The second question is: How are these transformations expressed within the creative visual expressions and the interview narrative structures? Critical theory provided the framework for deconstructing the narrative stories and exploring assumptions about power, knowledge, and reflexivity. Critical reflection was used as a two- staged method of deconstructing and reconstructing assumptions. Critical reflection tenants were used to inform research design. Rather than seeing power in terms of binary opposites, such as powerful and powerless, researchers can rethink how power is experienced and open new possibilities about defining power and how power can be used. As a critical narrativist, I had the task of seeking and recognizing the ways power is used in the participant researcher relationship. Both interviews, discussions around art- making and the visual artwork itself were used to acquire rich data. The community arts environments explored included collaborative mural creating, studio arts, community arts initiatives and group art therapy. The significance of the findings of this study were two-fold in that it has the potential to contribute to both scholarship and practice.
