This dissertation explores the role of music and visual art in commemorative events in Europe throughout the seventeenth century. Following the lead of medievalists, I look beyond disciplinary boundaries and consider the full range of media including written documents, visual art, objects, and performed (thus ephemeral) music that were used for commemoration. This multi-confessional and -regional project, set in Saxony, Bohemia, and the Low Countries, elucidates how acoustic and visual carriers of memory contributed to institutional or private forms of commemoration. For various religious and political events, such as the centenary of the Reformation (1617) or the Peace of Munster (1648), the rulers of these states consciously commissioned and thus produced media of memory in top-down fashion. Burghers or religious groups sought out their own media to memorialize these events, creating bottom-up media of memory. My portrayal and reconstructions of these commemorative events make clear that their specific procedures and the accompanying music and media had the ability to prompt people to remember a past, making a present fathomable and a future imaginable. Put differently, commemorative media had an impact on cultural memory; sometimes in unexpected ways, they situated individuals and communities in their present, shaped religious identities, political allegiances, and the historical narrative.I contend that the media of memory were interconnected and referred to each other, creating intermediality that influenced different senses. Furthermore, music held a special place; it speaks to the auditory sense that cannot be turned off, and can function as a bridge between communicative and cultural memory. The case studies in this dissertation illuminate what commemoration looked and sounded like in early modern Europe, and how it has contributed to historical understanding up to the present day.

520 $a Diese Doktorarbeit untersucht die Rolle von Musik und bildender Kunst bei Gedenkveranstaltungen im Europa des 17. Jahrhunderts. Dem Vorbild der Mediavisten folgend, blickt sie uber disziplinare Grenzen hinaus und betrachtet die gesamte Bandbreite der Medien, die dem Gedenken dienten, einschlieslich schriftlicher Dokumente, Musikalien, bildender Kunst, Objekte und aufgefuhrter (und daher ephemerer) Musik. Diese multikonfessionelle und -regionale Studie, mit Fokus auf Sachsen, Bohmen und die Niederlande, beleuchtet, wie akustische und visuelle Erinnerungstrager zu institutionellen oder privaten Erinnerungsformen beitrugen. Zwei Aspekte stehen im Fokus: bewusst in Auftrag gegebene Medien der Erinnerung sowie deren zufallige Produktion durch ihre Rezeption in der Offentlichkeit. Zu verschiedenen religiosen und politischen Ereignissen, wie dem 100-jahrigen Reformationsjubilaum (1617) oder dem Frieden von Munster (1648), wurden Erinnerungsmedien von den Herrschenden produziert. In der offentlichen Wahrnehmung konnten Medien zu Erinnerungsmedien werden, indem sie durch verschiedene soziale Gruppen als solche rezipiert wurden. Meine Darstellungen und Rekonstruktionen von Gedenkveranstaltungen des 17. Jahrhunderts machen deutlich, dass die Veranstaltungen, deren Musik sowie Medien, Menschen dazu brachten, sich an die Vergangenheit zu erinnern, die Gegenwart erfahrbar und die Zukunft vorstellbar zu machen. Anders ausgedruckt, die Veranstaltungen und die begleitenden Medien hatten Einfluss auf das kulturelle Gedachtnis; manchmal auf unerwartete Weise verorteten sie Individuen und Gemeinschaften in ihre Gegenwart, pragten religiose Identitaten, politische Loyalitaten und das historische Narrativ.Diese Arbeit zeigt, dass Medien der Erinnerung miteinander verbunden und aufeinander bezogen sind, wodurch eine Intermedialitat entsteht, die verschiedene Sinne anspricht und beeinflusst. Daruber hinaus nimmt Musik einen besonderen Platz ein; sie spricht den nicht abschaltbaren Horsinn an und kann als Brucke zwischen kommunikativem und kulturellem Gedachtnis fungieren. Die Fallstudien dieser Dissertation beleuchten, wie das Gedenken im Europa der Fruhen Neuzeit aussah und klang und wie es bis heute zum historischen Verstandnis der religiosen und politischen Ereignisse beigetragen hat.
