This White Paper provides recommendations for an acute care hospital to enhance its safe patient handling program. Part of the assessment at the facility involved conducting a study using the Safe Patient Handling Behavior Instrument (SPHB) created by Dr. Lee et al. (2010). 13 health care workers that perform direct patient care participated in the study which included taking the SPHB pretest, watching a targeted educational video on safe patient handling, and taking a SPHB posttest. Safe patient handling equipment inventory was completed in the hospital and OSHA injury logs were collected for the last three years. The data analysis and project implementation was completed through collaborating with Physical Therapy, the hospital executive team, and human resources. SPSS software was used and the results of the study, equipment inventory, and OSHA injury logs were reviewed and analyzed with the hospital leadership team and human resources through face- to-face meetings. Limitations were a small sample size and the study occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sustainability plan included having the leadership team review OSHA injury logs quarterly, investing in HoverMatts ®, friction reducing devices, a non-powered sit-to-stand device, and another Hoyer lift ®. The plan also included the introduction of peer coaches in safe patient handling to decrease health care worker injuries.
