The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the association between levels of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptomatology and disordered eating (ED) behaviors among young adults enrolled in college. Singularly, the prevalence of ADHD and ED has increased over the past decade, and there is evidence that they also exist together. ADHD is most associated with Bulimia Nervosa due to the inattention and impulsivity features of the disorder, however there is also a relationship between ADHD and Anorexia Nervosa and Otherwise Specified Feeding/Eating Disorder. This cross-sectional online study included two validated screening tools. The Adult ADHD Self-report Screening Tool version 1.1 (ASRS) was used to measure levels of ADHD symptomatology. The 26 question Eating Attitudes Test was used to measure levels of ED behavior. The survey was completed by a convenience sample of 18-24-year-old enrolled college students between September 30, 2021, and October 15, 2021. Among a total of 324 completed surveys, there was a statistically significant correlation between ADHD symptom level and ED behaviors (p ≤ 0.01). Upon univariate comparison, ED behaviors were statistically significantly associated with LGBTQIA+ identity (p < 0.05). ADHD symptom level was also associated significantly associated with ethnicity (p < 0.01). Findings from a larger and more rigorous study could significantly improve our understanding of the potential associations found in this pilot trial. Possible implications of these findings include identifying and improving screening measures for eating disorders among college students with high levels of ADHD symptomatology hypothetically leading to targeted, effective nutrition interventions.
