Preventing the symptoms of anxiety and depression from worsening has been determined to improve health outcomes for patients. In Kent County, Delaware, adults reported 4.8 poor mental health days compared to the national average of 3.8 days in the last 30 days (County Health Rankings, 2021). Psychological and physical health outcomes improve when a person practices proper nutrition, physical activity, and proper sleep habits (Briguglio et al., 2020; Wickham et al., 2020; Hepsomali & Groeger, 2021). It is unclear what medical and mental health providers recommend outside of first-line treatment for these symptoms. This study surveyed local, medical, and mental health providers to determine if they recommended proper nutrition, exercise, and proper sleep habits to patients. Fifty-seven providers from a local hospital/healthcare facility completed a survey to provide this information. This survey aimed to understand provider practices to determine if healthy lifestyles are being encouraged to lessen the effects of anxiety and depression symptoms among patients in Delaware. On average, the participants in this study showed they were more likely to recommend mental health counseling, counseling, or therapy overall than healthy eating, exercise, or getting enough sleep. Medical providers were more likely to recommend reducing the intake of sugar and fast foods and getting at least 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity than mental health providers. Mental health providers were more likely to recommend getting seven to eight hours of sleep and healthier eating habits than medical providers. The data from this study showed the differences between medical and mental health provider recommendations and contributes to future policy regarding providers' practices.
