Each year 2.8 million people are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and $28 billion is spent by the United States alone. Patients experience many symptoms but pain and fatigue are often most salient and current standard physical therapy techniques may increase these symptoms, negatively affecting compliance and effectiveness. When coupling the pathophysiology of the disease and the mechanism of functional electrical stimulation, therapeutic potential is evident. However, this intervention has not yet been well researched for the patient population. CINAHL Plus with Full Text, PubMed, and Academic Search Ultimate were searched using the following search terms: "multiple sclerosis", "functional electrical stimulation", and "fes". Four studies were eligible for inclusion in this study and the data for the following outcome measures were analyzed via Microsoft Excel: oxygen cost, gait, fatigue, and quality of life. Sub analyses were performed to control for baseline disability and treatment duration. Fatigue presented with homogenous results and a grand effect size of 0.47 (favoring intervention). Psychological quality of life presented with homogeneous results and a grand effect size of 0.89 (favoring control). Gait speed was found to be homogeneous and had a grand effect size of 0.34 (favoring control). Physical quality of life was the only outcome measure that presented with heterogeneity and a grand effect size of 0.09 (favoring intervention). Oxygen cost was not able to be analyzed due to lack of literature. Sub analyses revealed similar results except when analyzing physical quality of life and controlling for long treatment duration. Overall, the results of this study are inconclusive and functional electrical stimulation may be beneficial for certain patient presentations. Further research is needed on this topic.
