Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the three basic psychological needs-autonomy, relatedness, and competence-have been reviewed in literature to promote adherence to an exercise program. After review, it is not yet known if SDT is used as a framework for coaching philosophy in running. The purpose of this study was to interview coaches in the sports of cross country and track & field to determine, whether knowingly or not, if their coaching philosophies and programs are rooted in the three basic psychological needs (autonomy, relatedness, and competence) of self-determination theory. Through the recruitment of participants by the researcher, coaches were interviewed a semi-structured series of questions that explored their respective coaching programs and philosophies. Coaches were selected based on appropriate criteria including but not limited to; years of experience coaching at the collegiate level, top three conference finishes, and top 20 individual conference finishers. The responses to the interview questions and ensuing thematic analysis indicate that successful coaches of distance running do, in fact, implement philosophies that demonstrate themes of autonomy, relatedness, and competence.
