The organization of elements in the visual field is an automatic and rapid process that is carried out without resources, and is necessary in order to deal with a complex visual environment. The recognition of objects is essential for perceptual organization and occurs within a fraction of a second, even if there are no clues regarding the identity of the object. We investigated whether monocular portions of the visual system (mostly subcortical) are involved in object perception by controlling the visual information presented to each eye separately. Participants viewed eight Pac-Man-like shapes, divided into two groups of four. In one of the two groups, the four shapes were rotated to form an illusory object. A target appeared either in the center of the four shapes that did not create an object or in the center of the illusory object. Participants performed either a localization (experiment 1) or a discrimination (experiments 2 and 3) task. The object was un-predictive of the target location. Participants responded faster to targets appearing within the illusionary object only when the object and target were presented to the same eye but not when they were presented to different eyes. These results suggest that the attentional object-preference effect is mediated by subcortical structures, as indicated by monocular portions of the visual system.
