Many individuals of the Christian or Jewish faiths in the United States and elsewhere have felt strongly connected spiritually too and identified with the nation of Israel. For some, their incredible sense of identity and connection has prompted visiting Israel to gain a deeper understanding of their faith and its historical underpinnings. The purpose of this study is to understand how Christians visiting Israel negotiate and enact their identities personally, relationally, communally within Israel and after they return to the U.S. Theoretical framework of Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) (Hecht, 1993; Hecht, Collier, & Ribeau, 1993) Place Identity (Sense, 2004; Relph, 1976, Seamon, 1979) and some elements of Symbolic Interactionism (SI) (Griffin, 2015; Jeon, 2004; Jamieson, 1997) inform the basis of research. CTI explains how human beings enact and communicate their identity and purports that identity is a communication process allowing an exchange of messages and values. The concept of spiritual integration into CTI's exploration of identity offers the Christian perspective complementing the Jewish studies explored through this theory. This spiritual perspective broadens CTI's explanatory power while narrowing identity gaps and promoting an overall strengthening and connecting among the two identities. Place Identity refers to the affective dimension of people's relationship with a place. An examination of Blumer and Mead's SI's three core principles of meaning, language, and thought highlight how individuals construct a sense of self-identity through symbolic interactions.Keywords: Communication Theory of Identity, Symbolic Interactionism, Place Identity, spiritually integrative communication, spiritual identity, values, Israel, Jerusalem.
