African Americans continue to experience long-standing discriminatory practices in the financial industry as stated in the literature review. African American small business owners are often denied access to funds and capital for operational overhead more than their white counter parts, often crippling the ability to maintain and grow their businesses. This study used African American business owners and the Critical Race Theory as the conceptual framework. The purpose of the Modified-Delphi study was to gain a consensus to understand the financial challenges African American Business Owners face in obtaining funding. Entrepreneurship is highly beneficial for minority populations as it strengthens communities, creates employment, and uplifts economic conditions. These positive influences lead to improvement of schools and churches, which then become positive economic influences on the community. The study included African American experts in Long Island, N.Y. from various industries including Health/Medical Services, Legal Services, Community/Human Services, Food Service, Retail/Sales, Educational Services, Real Estate, Advertising/Marketing/PR, Entertainment/Travel/Leisure. Results from the study evidenced six major challenges: lack of access to capital/planning for funding and unfair market, institutional hurdles and community support, racism-discrimination, lack of access to resources, lack of preparation, and credit readiness/financial literacy-education. African American small business owners in Long Island, N.Y. face these challenges when aiming to achieve success for start-up and growth maintenance.
