Methane fermentation of papaya processing waste has shown its potential in reducing pollution problems and producing energy. However, grinding and the addition of large amounts of water to the wastes are two primary setbacks for this process. Though an improved two-stage anaerobic fermentation system was suggested to eliminate this weakness, it is complicated in structure and operation, and its detailed design and operational criteria are not yet established. A hybrid bioliquefaction and biogasification system was proposed in this study to improve the previously suggested two-stage system. At 30 °C, a detention time of 10 hours was required to release 80% or TCOD contained in the wastes. A 55-95% of TCOD removal efficiency and 0.179-0.433 1/1/day of methane production rate could be achieved at loading rates of 0.5-8.5 g TCOD/1/day. The operational and design criteria recommended as the optimum loading rates for maximizing TCOD removal efficiency and methane production rate were 1.268 and 4.754 g TCOD/l/day respectively. Mathematical models for describing this system and predicting the performance were also developed. The present system is simple in construction and operation compared to the other two-stage process.
