The families formerly placed in the Bostrichiformia were examined for phylogenetic relationships using phylogenetic methods and a monophyletic taxon concept. In order to polarize characters by the out-group method, the four extant suborders of Coleoptera and the series of Polyphaga were analyzed cladistically on repolarized traditional characters of the eye, mandible, metathoracic wing, malpighian tubules, prothorax, ganglia, genitalia, defense systems, metacoxae, abdomen, metendosternite, leg, and other systems. Ecological factors were considered, and homologies reexamined. A hypothesis of relationship of these groups was constructed using the Megaloptera and Neuroptera as the out-group at the suborder level and the non-polyphagan suborders for polarizations within the Polyphaga. The Bostrichiformia was discovered to be paraphyletic, and families were removed to a new series of Polyphaga and to a new superfamily of Cucujiformia. The monophyletic remnants of the Bostrichiformia are placed in four redefined families, and the redefined Bostrichidae divided into eight subfamilies. These taxa are based upon a hypothesis of phylogeny constructed on characters of the head, prothorax, legs, abdomen, larval characteristics, metathoracic wings, surface sculpture, and malpighian tubules. Evolutionary scenerios are discussed in relation to the characters and character states utilized, with resolution of problems of homology suggested by these scenarios more fully examined. Keys, diagnoses and lists of included taxa are presented for the families of Bostrichiformia (adults and larvae); the subfamilies of Nosodendridae and Bostrichidae; and the four species of Endecatomus. The taxonomy, biology and distribution of Endecatomus species is discussed, and previous concepts redefined. Two lectotypes and a neotype are designated for members of the genus.
