A Longitudinal Study of Second-Language Speech Patterns after Immigration Submitted by Donald Timothy White for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.This dissertation is a longitudinal phonetic investigation of L2 speech production by eight Cantonese L1-English L2 immigrants to English-speaking countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The participants, who had attended the same secondary school in Hong Kong, were recorded five times over a two-year period (once before emigration, and then at approximately six-month intervals). Data from these recordings were analysed and compared across the recordings of each speaker. Specifically, this analysis measured aspects of the speech stream that are often associated with L2 English accents in L1 Cantonese speakers. Segmentally, these comparisons include vowels (/iː/, /ɪ/, /ɛ/, /ae/, and /ɑː/), and consonants (word-final /ɹ/ and intervocalic [ɾ]). Suprasegmentally, these comparisons focused on speech rhythm as measured by seven durational metrics: Pairwise Variability Indices (PVI) for Consonantal (1), Vocalic (2), and Syllabic (3) intervals; Normalized Global Variability (Varco) for Consonantal (4), Vocalic (5), and Syllabic (6) intervals; and global percentage of vocalic intervals (%V) (7). In addition, a small amount of intonational data and connected speech processes were examined.Speech samples from each time point were rated by native speakers of American and Australian English for foreign accent, comprehensibility, and intelligibility. Throughout the two-year observation period, several acoustical modifications by the participants correlated with ratings for decreased foreign accent, increased comprehensibility, and increased intelligibility. These modifications included widening distinction between /i:/ and /I/, replacing intervocalic [t h ] with [ɾ], increased rhoticity, and increased durational variability as gauged by the speech rhythm metrics. These results were also considered in light of language experience factors, which were less generalizable due to individual differences; however, they were the focus of detailed analyses in the developmental paths of each participant. Among these language experience factors were the ratio of English to Cantonese use, innate phonetic ability, the desire to integrate, the desire to return to Hong Kong after graduating from university, residing with a host family, and demographic details of their new places of residence. As the study progressed, the importance of these individual differences became increasingly apparent. They are crucial to understanding the specific phonetic results of the eight participants.
