Brooklyn's three best known performing arts institutions, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)--incorporated in 1859, Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College (BCBC)--incorporated in 1951, and the Saint Ann's Center for Restoration and the Arts (St. Ann's)--incorporated in 1979, are the body of this study. Brooklyn's cultural performance history should be remembered for its own merits and not be integrated into the cultural history of New York City. This study preserves and documents Brooklyn's cultural history. The dissertation is divided into three major historical sections: BAM, BCBC, and St. Ann's. The cultural history and social context in which Brooklyn's performing arts institutions developed and thrived is chronologically developed. (A performing arts institution or center may be defined as any non-profit organization which produces music, dance, theater, or any other form of artistic performance, or which rents facilities to other producers under that institution's name and auspices.) The background histories on the founding of each of these institutions as well as their programming and management, architecture, design and construction, and renovations are documented. The artistic visions of the changing managements of these institutions which altered the programming of theater, music, and dance is also presented. The future envisions multi-ethnic performances in an ever changing borough. Presently, BCBC presents very traditional performances while BAM and St. Ann's appeal to a more avant-garde and multi-cultural audience. A comprehensive and carefully documented history of these performing arts centers is essential since none presently exists. Taken together, this dissertation and Samuel Leiter's 1968 dissertation for New York University entitled "The Legitimate Theater in Brooklyn, 1861-1898" record Brooklyn's prominent and influential place in American performance history.
