Although music educators highly value the skill of sight-reading, many pianists are lacking in the ability. Piano instructors have simply neglected the inclusion of sight-reading in piano study. It has not been understood as a skill apart from the acquisition of repertoire, one that can be taught in a systematic manner. Typically, piano instruction has concentrated on repertoire, interpretation, performance technique, artistic perfection and memorization. Although students may perform a limited amount of repertoire relatively well, many cannot efficiently explore new repertoire. This lack of sight-reading skill has caused many students to discontinue piano study and still others to cease to play the instrument altogether. In phase one of this study, a survey of piano teachers was conducted to assess the current status of sight-reading. The results of the survey indicated that sight-reading is not being addressed regularly, that commercial sight-reading materials are not being used widely, that the skill is not being tested, and that the current small amount of sight-reading instruction is haphazard. In phase two of the study, an author-constructed Diagnostic/Prescriptive Sight-Reading Program (DPSRP) was administered to college class piano students to determine its effectiveness at increasing sight-reading skill. Results indicated the students who received the DPSRP significantly increased in sight-reading skill (p =.004). It was concluded that the DPSRP was an effective tool for increasing sight-reading skill at the piano, and that sight-reading should be incorporated into piano study on a regular basis.
