The unifying theme of this thesis is that an understanding of the stress variations in the earth's crust and geomechanical modeling are essential for optimization and safe execution of underground fluid injection operations. This thesis integrates field studies, laboratory experiments and numerical modeling to (a) understand how the stress in the earth's crust varies with depth and (b) understand how stress influences injection induced fault slip and hydraulic fracture propagation. This integrated analysis is presented in the context of unconventional oil & gas production, stimulation of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), underground CO2 storage and induced seismicity applicationsChapters 2 & 3 describe the work I have performed as a part of the US Department of Energy (DOE) facilitated EGS Collab Project 1 , which aims to improve the understanding of stimulation mechanisms in EGS applications through a series of closely monitored experiments at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. In Chapter 2, I show through geomechanical analysis that mapping of faults and an accurate characterization of the stress state is essential to anticipate the fluid flow pathways in EGS. In Chapter 2, I highlight the variations of stress with depth at the experiment site and evaluate the potential of mapped fracture planes for injection induced fault slip. The two chapters also demonstrate the use of probabilistic slip analysis, commonly used in oil & gas related induced seismicity risk applications, to analyze the feasibility of shear-stimulation targets in EGS. Chapters 4 & 5 present two different methods to predict stress variations with depth and geological layering based on the viscoelastic stress relaxation principle. In chapter 4, I show a workflow to compute stress variations at discrete points using data from laboratory creep experiments. The analysis shows that the difference in creep parameters derived from the experiments can be used to predict the variations in the least principal stress at a field scale. Chapter 5 extends this concept and introduces a new method to predict a continuous profile of least principal stress from well log data. The method is based on a statistical model parameterized by the viscoelastic stress relaxation power law. Chapters 6 & 7 focus on applying the understanding of stress variations with depth to understand hydraulic facture propagation in a layered geological setting through numerical simulations. I highlight several examples based on field case studies which range from simple single fracture propagation to more complex real field scenarios involving interactions between closely spaced simultaneously propagating fractures, known as the stress shadow effect. I analyze the complex 3D interplay between the three main fluences in field scale hydraulic fracturing operations: stress layering, stress shadow and fluid flow inside the wellbore. The two chapters aim to provide a modeling framework to optimize hydraulic fracturing operations. Chapter 8 shows the seismological and geomechanical analysis applied to an induced seismicity case study based on a series of recent earthquakes near the cities of Midland, Odessa and Stanton in west Texas. The analysis shows that these earthquakes result from slip along critically stressed faults in shallow basement rocks which can be triggered by a very small increase in pore pressure. The analysis of injection trends shows that these earthquakes might have been triggered by deep waste-water injection in the Ellenburger formation of the Midland basin.
