Overweight and obesity in the US are a critical healthcare issue. Approximately, 38.6% U.S. Hispanics adolescents in comparison to 31.2% non-Hispanic Whites are overweight and obese. Overweight and obese individuals are more likely to suffer from diabetes, high blood sugar, escalated levels of blood fats, obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, stroke, gastro-esophageal reflux, and heart disease. In addition to the comorbidities, overweight and obesity are associated with negative psychosocial effects such as eating disorders and depression among adolescents. The purpose of the project was to use MyPlate nutrition and a physical activity education program among Hispanic adolescents to improve of healthy practices among the participants, thus, promoting a reduction in BMI. The project was based on a pretest-posttest design. A sample to n=40 participants was recruited but n=31 [female 16(51.6%) male 15(48.4%)] adolescents completed the study. The average age of participants included in the study was 15.19(SD=2.80) years. The mean weight of the participants before the implementation of the intervention was 200.74(SD=36.10) lbs that decreased to an average score of 190.48(SD=34.37) lbs after implementation of the educational program. The average reading of the BMI of participants pre and post intervention was 34.55(SD=3.49) Kg/m2 and 33.43(SD=4.60) Kg/m2 respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the pre- (M=33.43, SD=4.60) and the post-intervention (M=29.24, SD=3.49). BMI readings of the participants in the study was t(30)=12.21, p=.000 and within the 95% CI [3.49, 4.90].
