Mortality of fish discarded from commercial fisheries is often estimated by using physical injury or reflex keys to parse fish into different categories with unique estimated survival outcomes. While previous studies have noted that environmental and physiological conditions of released fish can influence survival estimates, these relationships have never been explored in Pacific halibut. In this study we examined the relationships of environmental and physiological parameters and viability classifications of Pacific halibut released from commercial longline gear using three common techniques: careful shake, gangion cut, and hook stripping. Environmental variables had minimal predictive influences on injury and viability outcomes, with some limited significance of depth and temperature associated with a small group of fish classified as dead. Individual levels of cortisol, glucose, and lactate showed large variability amongst fish, were unrelated to injury severity, and generally not predictive of viability classification. Release by careful shake and gangion cutting resulted in the least damage, while the use of hook stripper caused more severe damage with the strongest effects observed in smaller fish. Despite lack of significant relationships between the majority of variables and viability categories our results do demonstrate a strong influence of hook release method on injury severity. Reducing the use of hook strippers and limiting soak times in areas known to have higher concentrations of sand fleas are likely to improve viability outcomes of Pacific halibut released from commercial longline gear.
