A thorough hindcast analysis has been conducted of the wind and storm surge associated with Hurricane Florence, which made landfall on the southern coast of North Carolina on September 14, 2018. The storm was distinctive for its approach angle into Onslow Bay, a slow forward speed, and unprecedented rainfall accumulation while producing storm surge over multiple tidal cycles. These characteristics created unique opportunities to study storm surge, coastal circulation, and compound flooding. Multiple meteorological forcings were used, with careful analyses of the wind speeds and directions and comparisons of modeled results at numerous observation locations. Specific analyses examine the ADCIRC performance using four different meteorological forcings, water level contributions from Ekman transport, improvements to the ADCIRC wind speed reduction algorithms, identification of the impact of a surge forerunner on coastal water levels, and evidence for locations that experienced compound flooding.
