Background: The primary cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States is non-communicable diseases, with Louisiana ranked higher than the national average for 3 major diseases: cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes. Physical therapists (PTs) have the opportunity to integrate health promotion into standard practice; however, evidence suggests a lack of health promotion throughout the PT profession. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge, actions, and behaviors of PTs, as well as potential barriers, in promoting physical activity. Study Design: This study was an online, cross-sectional survey of licensed outpatient PTs in Louisiana administered through REDcap. Methods: In October 2021, an invitation to the 30-question survey was sent to 3,482 physical therapists in Louisiana via email and was open for 2 weeks. Responses were analyzed using REDcap's application tools and Microsoft Excel. Descriptive statistics were used for reporting relevant findings. Results: The response rate was 0.9%; a total of 33 physical therapists participated in the survey. Only 50% of therapists were familiar with the ACSM physical activity guidelines; 86% educated their patients about the importance of physical activity and provided an exercise program at discharge; and 72% reported that patient workload was the main barrier to providing patient education and health promotion. Discussion: The survey results indicated a lack of knowledge regarding physical activity recommendations and underutilization of patient education and exercise programs to promote health in patients with non-communicable diseases. The limitations for this study included a small sample size, allowing participants to use resources to answer questions, having multiple-choice guided answers, and self-selection bias. Future research could investigate physical therapists' workload and the impact on patient care, and if adherence to a home exercise program is impacted by patient education. Conclusion: In Louisiana, PTs should expand their knowledge of the ACSM guidelines, educate patients about the importance of physical activity, and utilize health promotion strategies. With this, physical therapists can transform society to improve the overall human experience.
