The present study examined the effect of Language of Instruction (LOI) on vocabulary learning among bilingual speakers of Hebrew and English, specifically asking whether learning is better through the first (L1) or the second language (L2). Participants learned three types of novel words in German, differing in their degree of form and meaning overlap with English: (1) cognate words, which overlap in lexical-form and meaning (e.g., Maus means 'mouse'); (2) false-cognate (FC) words, which overlap in lexical-form but not in meaning across languages (e.g., Gift means 'poison'); and (3) control words, which overlap in meaning but not in form across languages (e.g., Saft means 'juice'). In a two-session learning and testing procedure, half of the participants learned a total set of 55 novel words through their L1 Hebrew, whereas the other half learned the same set of words through their L2 English, which is also the more typologically similar language to German. Results showed that cognates were learned better in both Hebrew and English, but learning of FC and control items differed between the two LOIs. Whereas in the English condition control items elicited more errors than FC, in the Hebrew condition there was no difference between FC and controls. Moreover, the effect of LOI revealed an overall advantage for the group that learned through Hebrew, but this effect was only significant for control items in the translation recognition test, and for control items and FC in the translation production test. No LOI effect was found for cognates, which overlap across the L2 English and L3 German. Further, individual difference analysis revealed modulations of word type effects, such that individuals with lower L1 proficiency showed an advantage for learning FC compared to control items, whereas those with increased L1 proficiency did not. These findings suggest that learning of novel words is better through the L1, particularly with difficult-to-learn items and in tests that require novel language production. The interaction between the LOI and difficulty implies that learning through the more proficient L1 frees up more cognitive resources to deal with more difficult learning conditions, leading to more prominent L1 advantage under higher task requirements. The study underscores the importance of LOI, along with participant and item characteristics, in novel language learning.

520 $a המחקר הנוכחי בחן את ההשפעה של שפת ההוראה על למידת אוצר מילים בקרב דוברי עברית ואנגלית דו- לשוניים, ובאופן ייחודי שאל האם למידה תהיה טובה יותר דרך השפה הראשונה או השנייה. נבדקים למדו שלושה סוגים של מילים חדשות בגרמנית, אשר נבדלו במידה בה הן חופפות לאנגלית מבחינת צורה ומשמעות: )1 )מילות cognate ,אשר חופפות גם בצורה וגם במשמעות )לדוגמא, משמעות המילה הגרמנית Maus היא 'mouse 'באנגלית(; )2 )מילות cognate-false( FC ,)אשר חופפות בצורה אך לא במשמעות )לדוגמא, משמעות המילה הגרמנית Gift היא 'poison 'באנגלית(; ו)3 )מילות ביקורת, אשר חופפות במשמעות אך לא בצורה )לדוגמא, משמעות המילה הגרמנית Saft היא 'juice 'באנגלית(. המחקר כלל שני מפגשי למידה ומבחן, כאשר חצי מהנבדקים למדו סט של 55 מילים בגרמנית דרך השפה הראשונה שלהם )עברית(, בעוד החצי השני למדו את אותו סט של מילים דרך השפה השנייה שלהם )אנגלית(, שהיא גם השפה הדומה יותר מבחינה טיפולוגית לגרמנית. הממצאים הראו כי מילות cognate נלמדו טוב יותר גם דרך עברית וגם דרך אנגלית, אך למידת FC ומילות ביקורת הייתה שונה בין שתי קבוצות שפת ההוראה. בעת שבתנאי הלמידה דרך אנגלית למידת מילות הביקורת הניבו טעויות רבות יותר מאשר FC ,בתנאי הלמידה דרך עברית לא היה הבדל בין מילות ביקורת ו-FC .בנוסף, האפקט של שפת ההוראה היה מובהק רק עבור מילות הביקורת במבחן הזיהוי, ועבור מילות ביקורת ו-FC במבחן ההפקה. לא נמצא אפקט של שפת ההוראה עבור מילות cognate ,אשר חופפות בין השפה השנייה אנגלית והשפה החדשה גרמנית. יתר על כן, ניתוח של מדדי ההבדלים הבין-אישיים חשף מודו לציות של אפקט סוג המילה, כך שנבדקים עם מיומנות נמוכה בשפה הראשונה שלהם הראו יתרון ללמידת FC על פני מילות ביקורת, בעת שנבדקים בעלי מיומנות גבוהה בעברית לא הראו הבדל בין שני סוגי המילים. ממצאים אלו מצביעים על כך שלמידת מילים חדשות הינה טובה יותר דרך השפה הראשונה, בייחוד עבור מילים קשות ללמידה ובמבחנים שדורשים הפקה של השפה החדשה. האינטראקציה בין שפת ההוראה לקושי המטלה מרמזת על כך שלמידה דרך השפה בה הנבדק מיומן יותר )השפה הראשונה( מפנה יותר משאבים קוגניטיביים, ובכך מאפשרת התמודדות עם תנאי למידה קשים יותר. בהתאם לכך, היתרון של למידה דרך השפה הראשונה בלט כאשר דרישות המטלה היו גבוהות. ממצאי המחקר מדגישים את חשיבותה של שפת ההוראה בלמידת מילים בשפה חדשה, ומרחיבים את הבנת האופן שבו מאפייני הנבדים, מאפייני המילים הנלמדות, ותנאי הלמידה משפיעים על תהליכי למידת שפה.
