This research investigates the psychological benefits individuals who self-identify as makers experience from their creative process and specifically explores the problem-solving skills, problem orientation, and resilience of makers. Research was conducted utilizing both quantitative measures and qualitative interview questions in an online survey format. A Problem-solving Inventory, Negative Problem Orientation Questionnaire, and Resilience Evaluation Scale were used to quantitatively evaluate perceptions of the maker participants. An additional qualitative interview was used to more fully understand the maker experience. Results indicated that makers have high levels of problem-solving confidence, a positive view of problems, and high levels of resilience. The qualitative answers illustrated the benefits that the participants feel that making brings to their lives. Respondents identified several ways that making has benefited their lives, and that those benefits are generalized to other aspects of life beyond their maker pursuits. Benefits of maker culture and maker mindset are discussed as well as implications for incorporating them into art therapy practice. The student researcher offers several recommendations for further research into the maker culture.
