The purpose of this dissertation was to create an interactive and illustrated age-appropriate children's book for preschool-aged children and adults that teaches the concept of gratitude through a bibliotherapy approach. The aim was to introduce the concept of gratitude in a clear, concise, and creative way to preschool-aged children and to facilitate conversation about gratitude between a child and an adult. To evaluate the book, 17 adult caregivers, educators, and mental health professionals read the story and then completed a brief demographic form and a questionnaire regarding their overall impressions and recommendations. The questionnaire contained 14 Likert-scale items and 11 qualitative questions. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the 14 Likert-scale items; thematic analysis was used for the responses to the qualitative questions. Feedback indicated that many participants found value in the construct of gratitude and the message delivered to younger children, which supported that children could learn the concept of gratitude from the book. The participants suggested that through adult assistance, the different teaching methods, and through the potential for an emotional experience, aspects of gratitude could be absorbed. The participants also found the interactive activity and discussion questions at the end of the story useful for encouraging further learning. Additional feedback from participants suggested the need to revise the book's length and word choice as it presents a complicated construct that preschool-aged children may have a difficult time grasping or applying. When considering future steps, the book's current version could be aimed toward an older age group, and a different version could be developed after incorporating the suggested revisions to create a more age-appropriate version for children 3 to 5 years of age.
