The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to understand the lived experiences and perceptions of therapists who have used the fairytale therapy technique. There is very little information available on the use of fairytales in a therapeutic setting and the large portion of the available research is on children instead of adults with complex trauma. The theoretical framework used is the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotion. Two research questions guided this study (1) how do therapists who have experience using the technique of fairytale therapy describe their lived experiences with invented fairytale therapy with traumatized adults? The common themes that emerged were trauma, exposure to abuses (sexual and domestic violence), and large use of metaphors, problem solving, and themes of abandonment. The second research question was what are the perceptions of the efficacy, by therapists, of fairytale therapy with traumatized adults? The results were eengaging the use of fairytales are in therapy, how powerful and empowering they were for clients, and relativity to the pure story, the provided distance/safe place, universal use and the self. The implication of the study is that the therapists found the use of fairytales in therapy as universal and beneficial to all age groups, not just children for numerous disorders and symptoms. Recommendations for practice are for patients to create and the write their own fairytale to follow the hero/heroines journey. Future research should be a larger study with more participating therapists and a study on the lived experience of the patients.
