Workplace stress can induce physical and emotional burnout symptoms in nurses working in long-term care facilities. These symptoms can manifest as fatigue, body aches, anger, frustration, decreased responsiveness to patients, and workplace conflict engagement. Aromatherapy has been used as an alternative therapy to reduce burnout symptoms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of aromatherapy to relieve burnout symptoms among nurses and nursing assistants working in long-term care facilities.A convenience sample of 27 nurses from the short-term rehabilitation and the long-term care units of two long-term care facilities was selected. The Maslach Burnout Inventory tool was used to measure the pre and post-intervention burnout rates in emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA). Descriptive statistics was used to define the population. A paired-samples t-test was used to compare the pre and post-intervention burnout rates. After six weeks of aromatherapy, there was a statistically significant reduction in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization burnout rates: EE: t(26) = 8.85, p = <.001; DP: t(26) = 4.61, p = <.001. There was also a statistically significant increase in personal accomplishment rates: t(26) = -3.05, p = .005. The use of aromatherapy to relieve burnout among long-term care facility nurses may alleviate the physical and emotional symptoms of stress and improve overall work performance.
