Collaboration between primary care physicians (PCPs) and psychologists has been found to improve outcomes in primary care patients, yet this often does not occur. Research on collaboration challenges has traditionally focused on PCP perspectives and only rarely highlighted psychologist views. The current study is one of few to broadly explore psychologist (N = 190) perceptions of collaboration with PCPs, examining the relationships between psychologist burnout, PCP hierarchical attitudes and collaboration behaviors, and psychologist collaboration beliefs and behaviors. Results of statistical equation modeling analysis indicated that PCP hierarchical attitudes and collaboration behaviors accounted for 40% and 20% of the variability in psychologist collaboration beliefs and behaviors respectively and found a significant relationship between PCP collaboration behaviors and psychologist collaboration beliefs and behaviors. PCPs who were perceived as more hierarchical were also seen as significantly less collaborative, suggesting that hierarchical attitudes impede PCP collaboration with psychologists. Psychologists who saw PCPs as more collaborative endorsed significantly higher collaborative beliefs and behaviors themselves. These relationships were not more salient for psychologists experiencing burnout, or for psychologists practicing in the US (n = 132) versus Canada (n = 57). A validated assessment of psychologist views on PCP hierarchy and mutual collaboration is needed, and this study has sought to contribute to the literature by further developing a previously unvalidated measure. This updated tool, the Psychologist Perceptions of Collaboration and Hierarchy measure (PPCH) was pilot tested on expert judges, and scale psychometrics were calculated; three of the four subtests demonstrated acceptable to excellent internal consistency.
