Sir Harrison Birtwistle's music has long proven resistant to technical analysis. While contour theory has been applied to his work by several scholars, it has never served as the sole foundation of a study. This study applies musical contour theory, as defined by Robert D. Morris and developed by Elizabeth West Marvin and Paul A. Laprade, to Birtwistle's 2010 Trio for violin, cello, and piano. We find that contour similarity and correspondence connect most major sections of the piece, linking motives that are not united by pitch-class sets, interval, or other traditional methods of atonal analysis. Melodic contours in the Trio are examined using Morris's techniques, along with pitch-span contours and durational contours, following the work of Morris and Marvin. The study concludes by making the case for continued contour study of Birtwistle's music.
