Advancements in sport technology have made quantifying match-play external load a popular option for athletics personnel. Match-play monitoring has become part of holistic strategies applied in competitive sport. The purpose of this study was to describe average match-play demands for NCAA DII women's soccer, assess positional and time-specific differences, and evaluate relationships between external and internal load variables. Soccer athletes wore triaxial accelerometer and GPS units (PLAYERTEK) during all matches for the 2018 and 2019 competitive seasons. Measurements included total distance, sprint distance, number of Power Plays, top speed, and Player Load. Participants completed a wellness questionnaire the morning of each match, and recorded perception of effort (sRPE) post-match. Players that played at least 50% of the available minutes during the season were included in the analysis and descriptive statistics were determined. Multiple analysis of variance were used to assess interactions and main effects for time by position. Post hoc comparisons were used to probe main effects with appropriate effect sizes for magnitude inference. Spearman rank correlations were used to assess relationships between variables. Significant full match positional differences were found for total distance, Player Load, and top speed in this sample: midfielders ran longer total distances and had higher Player Load values; forwards ran faster top speeds. From first to second half of match: midfielders showed a significant decrease in Player Load, total distance, and top speed, and forwards showed a significant decrease in Player Load. These findings can be used by coaches to create and modify training programs.
