This study investigates the cybersecurity-related curriculum gaps in public health by examining cybersecurity course offerings at institutions accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). To understand these gaps, a content analysis of the publicly available course catalogs was performed. The course titles and descriptions were analyzed against almost 5,000 terms found in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Glossary of Key Information Security Terms, the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies Education (NICCS) Cybersecurity Glossary, and the Healthcare and Public Health Sector's Cybersecurity Working Group's (CSWG) Healthcare and Public Health Cybersecurity Primer. The findings suggest that there is indeed a cybersecurity curriculum gap in CEPH accredited institutions. This curriculum gap underscores the findings of the 2019 Public Health Workforce Interest and Needs Survey which found that more than half of the public health workforce feels as though they do not have the technical skills required to do their jobs (Sellers et al., 2019). In addition to being unable to utilize technology effectively at work, it appears that public health professionals may also lack the cybersecurity and cyber hygiene skills required to protect the systems that they rely on to protect the public's health, as stated in the public health mission.Cybersecurity is indeed a public health issue. The information systems and technology used to accomplish the public health mission are increasingly under attack from cyber threats. The field of public health, starting with the CEPH accredited institutions, must step up to prepare the workforce for existing and evolving cyber threats to public health critical infrastructure, trade secrets and proprietary information, healthcare system operations, the public's ability to find health-related truth among digital pandemics, and the population's health and well-being.
