This study identifies dominant social theory frameworks extant and preferred among the employees of a large, global company that has a mature, independently-validated cooperative safety culture, with demonstrable trailing safety performance significantly more favorable than its peers. Such companies commonly develop communication and leadership strategies to motivate their employees to work safely; however, these strategies typically are not designed to exploit social theories known to motivate. Therefore, without considering the preferred social theories that motivate employees, these strategies may be less effective, or even ineffective.Critical theory, expectancy-value, social learning theory, social exchange theory, structural strain theory, and symbolic interaction theory were studied, and an enterprise-wide survey instrument was deployed to collect data from the over 16,000 employees of the selected company. The collected data reflected employee perceptions of the extant social theories used to motivate employees and the social theories employees prefer to motivate them toward higher levels of safety performance. Employee data was grouped by global region, hierarchical, level, workplace type, and intra-organizational business segment. The results show dominance among social theories, both extant and preferred, with significant differences among the factors in dominance rankings. This information can then be used to harmonize communication and leadership campaigns to motivate employees toward higher levels of safety performance.
