This dissertation focuses on the fifteenth-century frescoes of the central ward, known as the pellegrinaio, of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, which depict the institution's history and daily life. Painted between 1439 and 1444 by Domenico di Bartolo, Priamo della Quercia, and Vecchietta, the frescoes present a rare example of extant early-modern hospital decoration. I particularly address the elaborate fictive architectural environments within each of the frescoes, taking an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the significance of the depicted architecture in the hospital context through analysis of architectural, medical and spiritual texts produced during the period, as well as extensive archival material at the Archivio di Stato di Siena. This research has revealed widespread communal investment in the hospital, and the vast resources spent on artistic and architectural endeavors-themes that are represented in the frescoes themselves. I ultimately argue that these wall paintings not only created environments of spiritual edification and visual delight, which were central concepts in practices of healing at the time, but that they also bound the healing experience to the structure itself, and by extension the community that supported it. This investigation of the bodily, spiritual and social ramifications of the visual arts in the unique context of the early-modern civic hospital contributes not only to the fields of art and architectural history, but medical history as well by demonstrating the productive implementation of art-historical methods in understanding practices and experiences of healing in early-modern Italy.
