Harmful algal blooms are a growing threat to aquatic ecosystems, fishing economies, and public health. My studies assessed the effects of exposure to the harmful algae Karenia brevis on the survival, growth, and development of the marine gastropod Crepidula fornicata. In addition to its overlapping range with K. brevis, C. fornicata has become a prolific invasive species and has recently gained attention as a potential aquaculture species. This research focused on exposure to K. brevis during the larval veliger stage, which is crucial to the dispersal and establishment of the species. We observed no significant effects of K. brevis on larval survival; however, there were several notable sub-lethal effects, including slower larval growth, delayed time to metamorphic competence, lower response to natural metamorphic cues, and reduced post-metamorphic growth. Slower growth and reduced metamorphosis extend the vulnerable larval stage, which has implications for C. fornicata survival and dispersal in the wild.
