Optical techniques for structural motion measurement seek to accurately extract spatially dense displacement information from remotely captured digital images of a structure. This has been an active area of research in mechanical engineering for over 30 years and has led to techniques capable of competing with more traditional motion measurement instrumentation such as accelerometers, LVDTs, and strain gauges, in both accuracy and precision, while offering far larger quantities of data with less intensive instrumentation labor. In this work, two separate techniques are developed, both of which use phase motion extraction techniques to improve on the state of the art in subtle motion extraction and measurement from remotely captured optical data. First, a new kind of optical displacement sensor is described using phase measured by convolution, and a sinusoidal surface pattern to accurately capture subpixel displacements from video with better precision than other state-of-the-art video motion measurement algorithms. For this work, the mechanism of the sensor is described, and numerous tests are conducted to demonstrate its performance. Second, a new technique for the extraction of subtle internal motion of solid 3D objects is developed. The technique of Volumetric Motion Magnification is defined in this thesis work as an expansion.
