This thesis focuses on examining the changes in air temperature and precipitation due to climate change and how they impact the surface water temperatures and other water quality parameters, such as the conductivity, DO, pH, and turbidity. The sampling areas were the Vermilion River, Bayou Chene, Lacassine Bayou, and Bayou Plaquemine Brule in Southwestern Louisiana. The water quality monitoring of the Vermilion River was done at four sites weekly and during or directly after precipitation events from October 2019 to February 2020. The water quality monitoring data regarding Bayou Chene, Lacassine Bayou, and Bayou Plaquemine Brule was collected from previous research done August 2012 to October 2016, August 2012 to March 2015, and April 2002 to March 2005, respectively. The weather data regarding the Vermilion River was collected from the weather station at the Lafayette Regional Airport and the weather data regarding the other waterbodies was collected from previous research and H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station located in Crowley, LA. The air temperature and precipitation data from 1980 to 2005 was analyzed in Excel to determine the changing climatic conditions. The water quality data for all waterbodies was analyzed in SASS to examine trends between the air temperature and surface water temperatures, surface water temperatures and precipitation, and precipitation and water quality parameters. As the precipitation and air temperature increased, so did the surface water temperature. This increase correlated in surface water temperature associated with the decrease in DO levels. The increase in precipitation also correlated with the increase in pH in Bayou Plaquemine Brule as well as the turbidity. There was an unexpected increase in surface water temperature with an increase in precipitation. This study's findings could be utilized in a dynamic climate modeling system to provide more accurate predictions of climate change in southwestern Louisiana.
